About Aunt Reene's

Step back in treenesthumb.jpgime in this award-winning, beautiful 130 year old traditional Newfoundland two storey Heritage Home located just 10 min. from the oldest city in North America, the culturally-rich capital city of St. John’s. Aunt Reene's Place was built in the late 1870's by Leander Squires and has remained in the Squires family ever since.

In the early 1900's it was passed down to John and "Irene" Squires. This property quickly became know in the community as "Aunt Reene's Place".

Irene, or Aunt Reene as she was known, lived here for 70+ years.  During her later years, she rented the house for a very modest monthly fee. In the late 70's, a middle age gentleman approached her and asked if he could rent from her while he built his little cottage about a half mile up the road. He informed her that he was a writer and was currently writing a book of poetry and felt that the "old house" would be a great inspiration for his poems which in turn would help him complete his work. Aunt Reene agreed to take him as her tenant and to that end, Mr. Percy Janes book of poetry, Light and Dark, was completed and published in 1980.

Aunt Reene continued to live here until her death in 1993 at which time she passed "the old house" down to the current owners, her grandson Gilbert and his wife Shirley.  In her honor, they have retained the name "Aunt Reene's Place".

This home has been lovingly restored with fine custom detailing and as much of it's originality and character as possible preserved and is very tastefully decorated with a complimentary mix of antique and new furnishings.  Aunt ‘Reene’s Place is situated in a peaceful, private country setting in the scenic town of Portugal Cove-St. Philips and boasts a breathtaking ocean view with spectacular vibrant sunsets.  It offers all the comfortable and modern conveniences of home such as cozy plush beds (1 queen & 1 double), fully appointed kitchen, laundry facilities, BBQ, satellite TV, DVD/CD surround sound system, wireless internet, cordless phones and is smoke and pet free.

With its old world charm and character, Aunt ‘Reene’s Place would be especially inspiring accommodations for artists, writers & musicians alike. As was the case for Percy Janes, acclaimed Newfoundland writer. Mr. Janes completed his wonderful book of poetry, Light and Dark, while residing here in the late 70’s & early 80’s.

Truly cozy, tranquil, and enchanting accommodations whether you seek inspiration for writing and creating or simple relaxation as you absorb the fresh ocean air and the sweet perfume of the old English flower gardens which blanket the property. Be captivated by the artistic performances of whales and porpoise as they frolic and play while feeding on caplin and squid as majestic icebergs glide slowly by, often waiting in the wings at the head of the bay.

Aunt ‘Reene's Place welcomes you…so come on in, sip a cup of tea and let your mind, body, and soul relax as you drift back to the older days, the simpler days, the days when time just seemed to stand still.
